The President of the republic was in Juba today to discuss post-referendum issues with his Southern counterpart.

The alternating talks are spearheaded by the African Union High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan and were agreed upon last month by the presidency.

Thabo Mbeki, chief of the AU panel, told journalists this afternoon that President Omar Al Bashir’s visit marked the start of a series of meetings the presidency pledged to hold between Juba and Khartoum to resolving the outstanding issues on time.

Mr. Mbeki said the panel briefed the presidency on the progress made on the security issues that took place last week in Ethiopia.

He added that the AU Panel also briefed the presidency about the meeting on economic issues which will start on Saturday.

Mr. Mbeki said that the delegations from North and South Sudan will meet again on the April 15 in Washington to discuss the issue of international debt.
