The governor of Eastern Equatoria denied claims that rebels loyal to George Athor have invaded the state.

Governor Louis Lobong Lojore told the press that claims made by George Athor were false and the SPLM condemned the allegations, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He said the issue was discussed during the SPLM Liberation Council meeting in Torit.

Mr. Lobong said Mr. Athor wanted to scare the public and glorify himself.

He added that the peoples of the Greater Equatoria have vowed never to support any insurgency against the Government of South Sudan.

The governor added that Equatorians believe in democracy while rebel commanders took arms against the government due to greed for power.

Mr. Lobong made these statements following rumours that rebels loyal to renegade Athor infiltrated some areas of Eastern Equatoria coming from Jonglei.
