Some Kator residents in Juba blamed the Church for the abrupt demolition of their homes during the rainy season and are claiming compensation.

Yesterday, heavy machines started demolishing illegal houses in the Kator residential area under the protection of a strong military and police presence.

Helen Tombe told SCR News that she lives in the area since 1958 and she has nowhere to go to.

She said she paid 20 pounds to have her name registered in order to get a new plot of land from the Ministry of Housing, but she found that there is no compensation for the residents who lost their homes.

Austiestic Francis said the residents were abruptly informed by soldiers that the area would be demolished the following morning, adding that he did not know what pressed the government to take quick action against them.

Suzan Joseph said the timing of the demolition was wrong because it is already raining in Juba.

She added that residents have already registered their kids in the schools in Kator and now it will be difficult for the families to provide transport for their children to come here for education.

The demolitions started last week in Old Custom in front of Dr. John Garang’s Tomb, and yesterday moved to Kator, around the Cathedral.
