Half of the population in South Sudan is under the poverty line and lives with less than 73 pounds per month.
This is the socio-economic reality the 2010 Statistical Yearbook reveals, Bakhita Radio reported.
Eliaba Damundu, who is the Director of Social and Demographic Statistics, said half of the population has less than 2.4 pounds to spend every day and 51 percent lives under the poverty line.
He added that the poverty line varies greatly from one place of residence to another.
Mr. Damundu explained that 99 percent of the population relies entirely on the forest for cooking, with 86 percent burning firewood and 13 percent charcoal or grass.
He said only 20 percent have access to toilets.
Mr. Damundu added that South Sudan has 72 forest reserves and seven game reserves.
Indicators from the 2010 Statistical Yearbook show improvements in the fields of health, education and sanitation in South Sudan.
