The Catholic Diocese of Rumbek launched on Sunday a fundraising campaign to build a new cathedral under the slogan “Donate one or more blocks.”

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari of Rumbek told Good News Radio that there is a real need for more space to accommodate Sunday worshippers in the cathedral.

He added that nearly half of the congregation in the second and third masses on Sunday has to stay outside the cathedral.

Bishop Mazzolari said the new see will hold one thousand people.

He added that the campaign will last for two years.

Bishop Mazzolari clarified that the old Cathedral will be used for prayers during the week even after the new Cathedral is built.

He added that the old see built some 60 years ago is an historical landmark because it was the cathedral of the very first Sudanese prelate, Archbishop Ereneo Dud.

Bishop Mazzolari revealed that the new cathedral costs 1.5 million Sudanese Pounds and the diocese will contribute 30 percent of that sum.

He said the fundraising drive involves pledges from the faithful and well-wishers to contribute towards the 500,000 blocks needed to build the new cathedral.

Each block costs three pounds.
