A women group is organizing the celebration of the International Women’s Day Monday at Payii Bridge, near Yirol town, in Lakes State.
Juliet Tunje from Women for Women International Sudan Chapter told Good News Radio that her organization decided to mark the event a day earlier to enable the women members to join the rest of the Lakes State communities at Rumbek’s Freedom Square on Tuesday, March 8, for the official celebration.
She said the event is titled “Let’s join at the Bridge”, explaining that the bridge symbolizes the essential connection between women from both sides of the river.
She also revealed that the participants will share peace messages among themselves.
Ms. Tunje further said that the Payii bridge celebration will be followed by programmes geared towards promoting women through human rights advocacy, economic empowerment and education.
The International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, at present and in the future, and a call to mind gender-based injustices still to be redressed.
This year marks 100 years since the event was first celebrated.
