The Pope condemned the bomb attack against a Christian Church in Alexandria, Egypt, as coward act of death.

On New Year’s Eve more than twenty people were killed and scores injured in Alexandria when a car bomb went off while the Coptic Christians were leaving Church after New Year’s mass.

The attack sparkled a wave of violent protests by the Coptic community in Egypt.

Pope Benedict said in his midday prayer yesterday at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican he received with pain the news about the grave attempt against the Coptic Christian community in Alexandria.

The pope denounced that there was a strategy of violence targeting Christians.

He encouraged the Christian communities to continue in faith and witness of non-violence that springs from the Gospel.

Pope Benedict urged the ecclesial communities to remain united in Christ, their peace.
