Food prices shot up in markets around Juba during the last couple of days because most food traders and vendors travelled home for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Prices of most commodities especially tomatoes are four Sudanese pounds more expensive while other food commodities shot up to two to three pounds.

Some traders who spoke to SCR News said a few trucks are coming from Uganda with food confirming that the crisis is likely to deepen since some of them fear the referendum might create tension.

South Sudan depends mainly on East African countries for food and other non- food items.

The traders said the outbreak of yellow fever in Northern Uganda did not disrupt food supplies to Juba.
