GoSS minister for Information said media in southern Sudan played an important role in promoting peace, democracy and good governance.
Barnaba Marial Benjamin made these remarks yesterday during the official launch of Sudan Radio Service FM station in Juba.Mr. Marial said his government licensed some 20 private and community based radio stations in Southern Sudan.
Mr. Marial added that his ministry is revising the media laws after GoSS president Salva Kiir Mayardit ordered their withdrawal upon protests from independent media groups.
Mr. Mariel urged the civil society to contribute to the media bills debate before the documents are approved.
Mr. Marial reiterated that the referendum will take place as scheduled on January 9.
He called upon the media fraternity in the south including radio stations to continue with civic education programmes to enlighten voters to choose through an informed decision.
A number of people have already lost their registration cards due to lack of care.
