UNMIS Human Right Office in Lakes State launched two days ago a 16-day campaign against gender violence to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

UNMIS Human Rights team leader for Lakes State, Albert Maurice Mugabushaka, told the press that the campaign aimed at raising awareness that violence against women is a violation of human rights and against national and international laws, Good News Radio reported.

Mr. Mugabushaka said women are the backbone of any society and need to be promoted, empowered and respected.

He added that a society that respects women is a better society.

Mr. Mugabushaka invited women and men to join in the fight for a society which is free from violence against women and girls in order to respect between men and women to prevail.

In South Sudan many women are still oppressed and kept away from decision making in society.

However, the trend is changing due to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the recognition women rights in the South Sudan Interim Constitution.
