The Catholic Bishops of Sudan appealed to their African counterparts to go a step further in their spirit of solidarity with the Sudanese Church and lobby for the referenda to take place on time.
The appeal, a three-page letter, was signed by all the 11 bishops of Sudan present at their ongoing Rumbek plenary. It was addressed by the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) to the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) and the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) delegations that were in Rumbek.
Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwok of Khartoum heads the SCBC Justice and Peace Department. He told Good News Radio that the Bishops of Sudan would like AMECEA and SECAM to lobby their respective Conferences and Governments for the referenda to be carried out without “obstruction, manipulation, and lack of good will”.
Bishop Adwok said the SCBC also thanked the willingness of AMECEA and SECAM to send observers to monitor the referenda and asked other African Churches to do the same.
The delegations of AMECEA and SECAM left Rumbek Wednesday afternoon after meeting with the Bishops of Sudan for two days in what has been described as “solidarity visit”.
