A minister called on women layers to support the law of evidence as an alternative to customary laws that penalize women out of prejudice.
Perpetua Ajonye is Central Equatoria Minister for Legal Affairs and Law Enforcement. She told women lawyers at a workshop today in Juba to help lawmakers understand the importance of evidence while dispensing justice to women.Ms. Ajonye said women were in most cases accused of poisoning, practicing witchcraft, committing adultery and infecting men with diseases without any real proof.
The minister urged women lawyers to provide legal support to women in the villages who were largely affected by customary injustices.
She said women faced many challenges and there were 16 cases of women’s suicides this year in just one county.
Ms Ajonye added that women faced challenges in all professional fields and urged female lawyers to support one another.
She concluded that Southern Sudan does not have yet laws governing all aspects of life and citizens suffering injustices in various social, economic and political areas expected good governorship.
