Delegations from the two peace partners resumed yesterday in Khartoum talks on some CPA outstanding issues including the Abyei referendum.

The talks are facilitated by the African Union High Level Implementation Panel on Sudan and include finding a solution to the Abyei question, the north and south border, popular consultation in Blue Nile and South Kordofan States, security arrangements between the north and the south, citizenship, oil and economic co-operation.

AU Panel Chairperson Thabo Mbeki told the NCP and SPLM negotiators that previous experience, including the signing and implementation of the CPA, suggested that the parties were capable of reaching agreement.

The AU Panel on Sudan said in a statement that both parties expressed their determination to find an agreement as soon as possible to communicate a positive message about the country to the people of Sudan, Africa and the rest of the world.

UNMIS and the US government will be at the negotiations as observers.
