Thousands of Southerners living in Khartoum started their journey towards South Sudan ahead of the referendum on self-determination.
A statement from the SPLM-Southern Sector said reports from Khartoum indicated that Southern Sudanese were leaving the capital on a convoy while others were travelling by plane.The statement added that according to eye witnesses in one single hour, 90 buses and 38 trucks left Khartoum heading towards Southern Sudan.
The convoy with some ten thousand people is expected to reach its destination within ten days.
A source familiar with preparations to welcome returnees ahead of the referendum told SCR News that at least 500 thousand people are expected in Southern Sudan during the coming month.
