South Sudan All Political Parties Conference that concluded late last evening in Juba called for timely, free, fair and transparent referenda in south Sudan and Abyei.
Abdon Agou, GoSS secretary general, read the Conference’s resolutions calling for the referenda to take place as stipulated in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and in the Constitution.The Conference called on the governments of Sudan and Southern Sudan and on the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission to ensure a conducive environment for both votes.
The conference agreed that campaigning for both options should be balanced and not provocative.
The conference resolved that if the unity vote wins, the South should take an active part in the Constitution review process to safeguard its position in the new political order in the Sudan.
GoSS president Salva Kiir Mayardit said in his closing remarks that his government would work to ensure that the right to self-determination for the peoples of south Sudan and Abyei was exercised in a timely, free, fair, transparent and peaceful environment.
Mr. Kiir added that he would call a similar conference immediately after the referendum to discuss the new political situation emerging from the vote on self-determination.
