Handwashing with soap can protect children and adults from many infections, said a health official.

Today the world celebrated Global Handwashing Day.

In Juba, UNICEF organized a practical demonstration on handwashing with soap at the Al-Sabah Children Hospital and in one primary school.

Daniel Dabi Nathaniel, Al-Sabah acting administrator, said the event was significant because it reminded mothers how to handle food and food utensils at home and keep their children clean.

Mr. Dabi explained that the exercise would minimize diseases such as diarrhea and typhoid that affect many children.

He said these diseases are rampant in the community due to lack of proper sanitation habits.

Mr. Dabi advised people to wash their hands with soap after easing themselves to avoid unnecessary infections.

Mr. Dabi explained that people should also keep their fingernails cut and bathe themselves to keep infections away.
