The Government of South Sudan and the Holy See are establishing official diplomatic relations through the exchange of verbal notes at the office of the UN in New York.

The Apostolic Nunciature in Khartoum announced that the exchange takes place on Friday between the Mission of the Holy See and the Permanent Mission of South Sudan to the United Nations.

The Communiqu√Ö¬Ω from the Vatican embassy in Khartoum said the exchange of ambassadors between South Sudan and Khartoum signalled the desire to promote bonds of mutual friendship.

It added that the diplomatic relations will strengthen the bonds of collaboration and friendship between both countries and give the Catholic Church full freedom to accomplish her spiritual, educational and social mission to benefit the people of South Sudan.

The Nuncio in Sudan will be the Pope’s ambassador to South Sudan.
