Juba has accused Khartoum of destabilizing key Jonglei State to discourage oil investments in the key economic area.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press on Tuesday that the Government plans to connect Jonglei with Djibouti via Ethiopia with a pipeline and a road to export crude.

He said Sudan is supporting a rebellion in the area to discourage investors, including Total, a French oil company.

Dr Marial explained that Jonglei represents a major economic strategic area for South Sudan and Sudan does not want stability there.

He added that what’s going on in Pibor is more than a mere tribal conflict.

Dr Marial urged the UN especially UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, to do its duty by monitoring and conducting earlier warning to avoid clashes like the one that happened last week in Akobo killing over 100 people.

He said UNMISS has to protect the civilians and to alert the UN Security Council about killings at the border with Sudan and violations of South Sudan’s air space.

Dr Marial announced that South Sudan is working on mechanisms to control its airspace.
