Staff at St Bakhita Health Centre in the catholic Diocese of Yei called on the general public to end the discrimination against the people infected with leprosy.
Medical doctor Veronica Rascope told Radio Easter that the theme for the 2013 celebration of World Leprosy Day on Sunday was “Stop discrimination against a person affected with leprosy and promote early diagnose and treatment of the disease.”She said those infected with leprosy should be fully integrated with respect in the family and society because they were useful and leprosy was not contagious.
Sr Rascope said leprosy is curable and people with suspected skin signs and symptoms should go immediately to a doctor instead of seating on it or consulting traditional healers.
She explained that leprosy treatment was free of charge and it stopped the illness but did not repair deformities of hands of feet.
