Lakes State Information Minister on Sunday acknowledged the role of churches in the country’s quest for independence.

Information Minister, Charles Badiri Mayan said that churches under the auspices of the New Sudan Council of Churches, contributed immensely to the process that led to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, Good News Radio reported.

He singled out the Catholic Church as having contributed greatly to the realization of the country’s independence and human development.

Mr Badiri noted that the Catholic Church has empowered a good number of South Sudanese who are currently involved in the development of the new nation from various capacities.

Badiri Mayan said it is unfortunate that while the country marks her first independence anniversary, some people are still plotting to kill others.

He said the task of building the new nation requires collective responsibility, efforts, ideas and spirit of peace and reconciliation.
