UN CHIEF CONGRATULATES SOUTH SUDAN ON ITS INDEPENDENCE DAY

The United National Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon has congratulated the people of South Sudan on the first anniversary of their Independence and called on the leadership of the new country to plan for a better future for its people.

On its message read by his Representative in South Sudan Hilde Johnson, Mr. Ban Ki-moon said South Sudanese must be proud of their hard won freedom after years of oppression.

He called on the leaders of South Sudan to plan for a better future for the current and next generations.

Mr Ki-moon explained that South Sudan has achieved a lot but must still work hard to achieve more.

He affirmed that relationship between South Sudan and Sudan was tense after independence.

The UN chief called on the two nations to work together to overcome the difference and stay good neighbours.

The Secretary General said the UN Security Council extended the UNMISS mandate in South Sudan in order to protect civilians.
