Over 2.7 million South Sudanese threatened by food shortages are to receive assistance until August.

WFP, the World Food Programme, said distribution of food is increasing rapidly and partners had already reaching more than a million people across South Sudan by the end of April.

The Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster is working with humanitarian partners to scale up their operations in the border states, where recent fighting and the shutdown of trade with Sudan threaten to push more people into a food-security emergency.

The UN Humanitarian Air Service is making 900 flights per month to enable humanitarian workers reach remote areas, with food, medical kits, fuel and other items.

Poor harvests, soaring food and fuel prices, and conflict-related displacement have led to rising hunger and malnutrition in South Sudan this year.
