The UN Secretary General said he was deeply concerned about the military border clashes between South Sudan and Sudan, and called on the Governments of Juba and Khartoum to stick to the agreements they reached on security, border monitoring and the disputed area of Abyei.

Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said the UN chief urged South Sudan and Sudan to use to the fullest extent existing political and security mechanisms to address their differences peacefully.

This statement comes after SAF and SPLA forces clashed on Monday and South Sudan troops occupied oil-rich Higlig region in the Sudan.

President Omar al-Bashir suspended a planned trip to Juba next Tuesday to attend the Presidential Summit in protest for the occupation of Higlig.

Ban’s spokesperson urged the two presidents to meet on April 3 as planned.
