SOUTH SUDAN AIMS TO FOSTER NATIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH SPORTS

South Sudan is aiming at developing culture, youth and sports to foster national identity.

National Minister Cirino Hiteng Ofuho told the press this morning that the ministry is having a very vast programme in the area of culture, youth and sport.

He said a lot of work has been done in literature texts on how to develop and promote cultural identity.

Dr Hiteng added that there is need to concretely developed harmony among the people in order to foster the national identity.

He said the ministry had worked hard to bring a lot of programmes though there were many challenges.

He said South Sudan has the potential of building the national youth service that outlines the role to be played by young people in the country.

Dr Hiteng explained that the bulk of the youth in South Sudan are jobless or dropped out from high school and cannot further their studies.

Director General for Sport Edward Settimo Yugu said sport is not just for leisure but for development and peace.

He explained that the directorate of sport in the ministry is forming an association for various sport disciplines who will take over and implement the programme of the association.

Mr Settimo said his directorate is going to work closely with the ministry of general education and instruction to place sports as compulsory subjects in the schools.

He added that they will make sure that there are inter-schools and inter-states competitions in the country every year to bring people together.

The Minister of Youth and Sport said there is need to open training centres all over the country including Abyei.
