A peacekeeper serving with the joint United Nations-African Union operation in Darfur known as UNAMID was killed yesterday in an ambush by unknown gunmen.

Three other peacekeepers were injured in the attack, which took place about 4 p.m. near Shearia, in South Darfur state, UNAMID said.

Yesterday’s killing brings to 36 the number of UNAMID peacekeepers killed in Darfur since 2008.

On Saturday, two other peacekeepers were wounded in another attack.

UNAMID has more than 23,000 uniformed personnel, including over 17,700 troops, tasked with protecting civilians.

The Darfur conflict started in 2003.
