The rural urban migration of mainly youths is the major cause of low agricultural production among the subsistent farmers in Yei River County.
Yei County Assistant Commissioner for Agriculture Edmond Gogo told Radio Easter that the movement of young men on boda-bodas is discouraging farmers. He urged young men doing boba-boda business to offer at least two hours of their time every day to cultivate before going for their business because the youth have the energy to farm the land.
Mr Gogo added that lack of agricultural tools is also another impediment for farmers to produce more food.
He said the county is following the master plan of nine strategies developed since 2002 to boost agricultural production.
Mr Gogo added that they have chosen five strategies from the master plan which focus on agricultural production and productivity and that the plans are working well because there is good harvest for last cultivation season.
He urged farmers to work hard and prepare the lands for the first planting season this year.
