The head of UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, told the UN Security Council that there was no evidence of mass killings during the Lou-Nuer attack in Pibor, Jonglei State.

Hilde Johnson said reports that at least 3,000 people died in the clashes were false alarm.

She added that there was no evidence to support the numbers after a visit to the scene of the clashes.

On Friday, Pibor County Commissioner Joshua Konyi told CRN News that at least 2,182 people were killed in the clashes and that the count was provisional.

Ms. Johnson said the cycle of violence in Jonglei State must end.
