The UN has said that humanitarian operations to assist the victims of inter-tribal violence in Jonglei State will be the most complex and expensive since peace was signed in South Sudan.
Lise Grande, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, said in a statement that the areas of intervention are extremely remote and can only be reached by air.She added that delivering assistance by air is hugely expensive compared to delivery by road but in the areas affected in Jonglei there is no choice.
Humanitarian partners estimate that at least 60,000 people have been affected by the recent violence, and the figure may rise.
Most of the people who need assistance have been in the bush for up to two weeks, in many cases without food, clean water or shelter.
Preliminary results of assessments areas indicate that the most urgent needs include high-nutritional food, clean water, health care and shelter.
