The Vatican announced that the Pope will visit Mexico and Cuba at the end of March in his third trip to America.

Pope Benedict will be in Guanaguato and Leon, Mexico, from March 23 to 26 and in Santiago de Cuba and Havana, Cuba, from March 26 to 28.

The Pope said that in his visit to Mexico and Cuba he wants to proclaim the Word of Christ. He will deliver a message to the bishops of Latin America and meet Cuban president Raul Castro among other acts.

Vatican spokesperson Fr. Federico Lombardi explained that the Pope will not visit Mexico City, the Mexican capital that is home to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, due to its altitude of over 2,200 metres.

He added that the Pope hopes to visit Lebanon during this year to deliver his document about the Bishops’ Synod on the Middle East that took place two years ago.
