A number of Bahr el-Ghazal University students took to the streets of Wau yesterday after they were left for three days without water at the campus.
The students showed their discontent by putting road blocks in the main roads of Wau, stopping vehicles. The principal of the university, Isaiah Ayuel Deng, told Radio Voice of Hope that the students were not violent.
He added that they took to the streets to complain over the lack of basic services in the hostels, including water, food and hygiene.
Professor Deng said the State government sent a small group of police to rescue the situation and remove the roadblocks.
The principal explained that the university administration is accommodating a group of needy students from Upper Nile and Greater Equatoria who did their supplementary exams and asked to stay in until the university reopened.
Professor Deng said he expected the University to reopen this week when he allowed the students to stay.
The principal said the administration regrets the situation that took student to the streets, and wished that they acknowledged the act of hospitality that the university was doing to them.
Professor Deng called upon the students be patient and cooperate with the administration to promote a good learning environment.
Some university students, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the demonstration was peaceful and acknowledged that the administration solved the water situation.
