The Commissioner of Tonj South County visited yesterday inmates at Tonj Central Prison and patients in Tonj Civil Hospital as part of Christmas celebrations.

Akech Tong said the visit to the prison was to show the prisoners that they are not being abandoned by the Government, Radio Don Bosco reported.

He announced a screening to be done on January 1, 2012 so that those with light offenses can leave prison.

Mr. Tong said that he will talk to the judge to look into the cases of prisoners waiting for trial.

He urged the prisoners to admit their mistakes to solve their cases faster adding that compensation is better than staying inside.

The commissioner offered a cow, and soap and one kilo of sugar to each prisoner and packets of sweets to mark the feast.

More than two hundred prisoners are detained in Tonj Central Prison, mostly for murder, cattle raiding and adultery.

Tonj Central Prison serves the three counties of Greater Tonj.
