Heavy rains in Lakes State have caused extensive floods leaving many homeless and exposed to malaria and other waterborne diseases.

Flood victim Malong Amopiny from Mayom Payam told SCR News that vegetables, tobacco and other crops were washed away by the floods.

He added that there was no help from official authorities and the homeless needed plastic sheeting to build temporary shelters.

Almost 90 huts were totally destroyed in Mayom payam by floods with residents trying to get temporary accommodation in a local school.

Mayor Achinyor from Paloch Payam of Rumbek East is another victim of floods. He said two children died while trying to cross a river that swelled with the heavy rain.

He asked the authorities to build a bridge in the area to avoid another tragedy.

The governor of Lakes state, Chol Tong Mayay, said he formed a ministerial committee to deal with the floods victims.

He appealed to the UN and NGOs for assistance.
