The Mayor of Juba said that his office is issuing a ban on billboards with beer adverts.

Mohamed Alhaj Babala told yesterday’s attendance at the swearing in of the members of Juba City Legislative Council that the beer ads encourage people to drink much, including the young.

He said the messages advertising beer consumption are “nonsense”.

Mr. Babala denied that he is introducing Sharia law in Juba.

He explained that the ban aims at encouraging people to work and be productive.

Mr. Babala said young people are drinking too much in Juba because they do not have public parks where to engage in sports activities and go to discos and bars instead.

He said a public park in Juba would reduce the rate of drinking among the youth.

The legislative councillors applauded Mr. Babala’s statement.

MPs from Central Equatoria, the president of the State High Court, ministers and advisors attended the swearing in ceremony.
