The Governor of Lakes State was asked by the Ministry of Justice to settle out of court a case between the Information Minister and the state radio’s former Assistant Director.

Former Assistant Director Peter Maliap Chieny showed to Good News Radio a letter from the Head of Legal Administration Majok Dau Kuot addressed to Governor Chol Tong Mayay requesting him to look into the case between the Minister and the dismissed official.

The letter added that if the governor failed to settle the case, the court would request lifting the Minister’s immunity to undergo legal proceedings.

The legal administration said in the letter that the Minister of Information violated Article 284 of the Penal Code Act 2008 that prohibits wrongful confinement of persons in prison. The sentence is three years in jail or a fine.

Mr. Chieny is accusing the Minister of having jailed him in Rumbek Police Station for three days without charges.

He said he had completed legal proceedings and that he was only waiting for a response from the Governor for a legal redress in court against the Minister.

The Public Prosecution Attorney also summoned Manyang Mayom, the Director of State Radio.

Mr. Chieny was sacked on August 2 by the Minister of Information on grounds of alleged indiscipline including assaulting the station’s director.
