The leading parties in North and South Sudan have agreed to demilitarize Abyei and entrust peacekeeping in the region to the Ethiopian army.
The agreement signed in the Ethiopian capital, also puts in place a joint administration for Abyei.Thabo Mbeki said the agreement inked under his mediation will bring to an end the threat of violence and actual violence in the area.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the deal.
The northern army invaded and occupied Abyei over one month ago destroying the city.
Over 100 thousand people were displaced by the attack.
