South Sudan has started producing its own fish in Jonglei, Lakes and Upper Nile states.

The director general for fisheries in GoSS ministry of animal resources and fisheries Undo Andrinoti said cooperative fishing is already taking place in several areas of South Sudan and a barge brings fish twice a month to Juba.

He explained that South Sudan fish was softer compared to fish from East Africa because the department has problems with cold storage facilities.

Mr. Undo said the border services were cautioned to be alert against rotten fish from East Africa.

He added that drivers must produce certificates of genuine and clean fish from the East African countries.

Mr. Undo said fish is very important for food security and its sale has to meet some standards to safeguard public health.

He added that his department is putting up more fish farms to increase the availability of local fish in the country.
