The Diocese of Torit is to start on May 28 a prayer campaign for the independence of the Republic of South Sudan.

Vicar General Celestino Muras introduced the campaign to the congregation at Our Lady of Assumption Church on Sunday, Emmanuel Radio reported.

The Vicar General is the second in the diocese’s administration line after the Bishop.

Fr. Muras said the prayer campaign before and after the Independence is an initiative of the South Sudan Catholic bishops.

He said the provisional plan of the diocese is that Christians will make a procession from Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral at Hai Mission to Our Lady of Assumption.

He said the procession will have stopovers at the hospital and prison for prayers.

Fr. Muras explained that a novena of prayer will run until July 8 adding that there will be a day for reconciliation with rituals to be performed as the people march to the new nation.

The Vicar General said Catholic youth and children will special days and the leaders of the new country will be celebrated at Pentecost vigil.

The prayer campaign for the independence follows an earlier initiative of 101Days of Prayers held by the Catholic Church in Sudan for a peaceful referendum.
