A security forces team has recovered a total of 500 heads of cattle and 31 guns in Eastern Equatoria state in the last three weeks.
About 12 people have so far been arrested during the operations in nine villages of Torit and Lafon/Lopa counties, Emmanuel Radio reported.Ten suspects were paraded and 16 guns displayed to the press as well as the public at the former police offices in Torit.
Eastern Equatoria Deputy Governor Nartisio Manir Loluke explained that the suspects were arrested on various charges including murder, cattle theft and public disorder.
He said that elements of social instability would be arrested too.
Mr. Loluke added that there were also chiefs among the suspects accused of helping criminals by hiding their identity and turning in innocent people.
The deputy governor said such chiefs should face courts of law.
He added that chiefs should enforce law and order in their communities.
Mr. Loluke announced that some criminals who have been disrupting movement of people along the highways are now behind bars and the roads are free for passengers and goods to travel.
He added that organized forces were deployed at hotpots to boost security.
The deputy governor listed a number of factors including logistical shortfalls, difficult terrains and political interference as challenges facing the Justice and Peace Mission meant to bring total harmony in the state.
