Members of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly are undergoing a two-day workshop on their role of promoting Human rights awareness in South Sudan.
The workshop comes at a time when human rights situation in South Sudan is worsening due to upsurges in violence by rebel groups.Addressing the participants, SSLA deputy speaker, Daniel Awet told the MPs that human rights should be felt within them to be exercised fully.
He added that the violations taking place currently are the worse, calling for the MP’s ability to execute the activities to promote human rights.
The head of South Sudan Human Rights Commission, Lawrence Korbandy, appealed to the MPs to enact bills that have relevance to people’s welfare like child protection, education and family acts.
Less than forty MPs out of 170 MPs attended the workshop.
The workshop was organized by the South Sudan Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the UN Human Right Commission.
