Egypt is in full support of the implementation of the CPA regardless of reports that last year it lobbied to the United States to postpone the referendum as it feared that the new nation could jeopardize its share of the Nile waters, a GoSS minister said.

Goss Minister for Information and Broadcasting Barnaba Marial Benjamin told SCR News that the Egyptian government made it clear that it supported the full implementation of the CPA and would respect the decision of the people of south Sudan at the vote on self-determination.

Dr. Marial said the bilateral relationships with Egypt were good and indicated a good future for the two countries.

WikiLeaks revealed that the Egyptian government believes that south Sudan’s independence could have damaging implications on the country’s dominance over Nile waters and lobbied for the vote to be postponed.
