The Holy Bible and the Qur’an provide a good basis for democracy in Sudan if believers follow them.
Robert Schreiter is a Roman Catholic priest and a theologian at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, USA. He told journalists yesterday in Juba the lack of respect for freedom of worship in Sudan is a challenge for a genuine, participatory and working democracy.Fr. Schreiter said that Christians and Muslims very often did not live to biblical and Qur’anic teachings.
He added that both holy books are very close and provide a good basis for democracy.
Fr. Schreiter stressed that literacy is an important element for the democratization of Sudan.
He said that reading skills was paramount to voting during elections.
Fr. Schreiter added that religious tolerance is the best way to open grounds for social relations and negotiations towards a peaceful coexistence.
