The transitional areas of South Kordofan and Blue Nile were cheated by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement process and their discontent could easily be turned into violence and bring the nation back to war.

This is the position of John Ashworth, an adviser to the Catholic Bishops in the Sudan, in an interview with SCR News.

Mr. Ashworth said that the people of South Kordofan and Blue Nile were cheated on the right of self-determination by a popular consultation that will be made through MPs that do not represent the views of the people.

He added that popular discontent could throw the whole country into war again.

Mr. Ashworth said the Assembly of Blue Nile, dominated by the NCP, does not represent the views of the whole state and the same could happen in South Kordofan after elections took place.

He added that many people in those two states thought they too had a referendum on self-determination until very recently when they discovered it was a popular consultation carried out by legislators.
