At least ninety five percent of registration centres in south Sudan are operational, said the head of the referendum bureau.
The chairman of Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau Chan Reec Madut told the press yesterday that the reports available showed that most centres were operational and the turnout was rather low.Mr. Reec said there were no reports of insecurity during the first two days of registration.
He added that the centres did not have enough staff especially in big towns and the queues were long.
Mr. Reec said the Bureau was going to recruit additional registration staff to speed up the process in big centres.
Mr. Reec said the Bureau did not have means to communicate with places not covered by mobile networks but the Government of Southern Sudan purchased satellite phones to ease communication during the referendum.
