An official said southern Sudan has a huge farming potential and could become again a food exporter and reduce dependency of oil for revenue if its agricultural productivity improved.

USAID Deputy Mission Director, Susan Fine, told SCR News that southern Sudan used to export food to other countries before the war.

Ms. Fine revealed that the region could regain that reputation if its arable land was properly used and production methods improved.

Ms. Fine added that improvement of agriculture in southern Sudan would reduce dependency on oil revenue and boost the economy of the region.

Mrs. Fine revealed that USAID was committed to increase food production in some fertile areas of southern Sudan to increase rural income and provide economic opportunities.
