The referendum is the top priority for Eastern Equatoria government policy statement for 2011.

State governor Louis Lobong Lojore told lawmakers yesterday during the reopening of the Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly yesterday that the referendum together with good governance, security, food security, basic services and fighting corruption were key areas for his government.

Mr. Lobong explained that the referendum will offer to the people of Southern Sudan the golden opportunity of a final walk to freedom.

He called for a collective effort besides the one-day basic salary offer from the legislators to ensure security, peace, love and harmony in the state for the smooth conduct of the referendum.

Mr. Lobong told MPs that the Referendum Oversight Committee, Pre-Referendum Committee, Post-Referendum Committee and State Secretariat Committees were already formed to supplement the efforts of Referendum High Committee in the state and the Referendum Sub-Committees in the counties.

The governor emphasized that the committees were set to ensure a peaceful and conducive environment that enhanced co-existence, protection of lives and private property.
