The UN food and agriculture agency launches today a 30-day programme to fight hunger in South Sudan.
UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and partners kicked-off a campaign of 30 Days of Activism Against Hunger in Southern Sudan to make hunger history in the region.South Sudan is marred by food insecurity and poverty due to decades of civil conflict, the disruption and loss of economic activities, displacement and lack of basic infrastructure.
FAO said in Southern Sudan an estimated 4.7 million people are exposed to hunger and some 1.5 million people rely on food assistance this year.
It revealed that the condition in southern Sudan is one of the worst humanitarian and food-security situations in the world.
In 2009 Southern Sudan needed about 850,000 tonnes of cereals to feed the population, but produced only about 660,000 tonnes leaving a gap of 225,000 tonnes.
The 30 Days of Activism Against Hunger will culminate in the launch of the Food and Agricultural Organisation’s Plan of Action for Southern Sudan on November 17, 2010.
