SPLM reassured China that its huge oil investments in the region would be protected if the southerners voted for independence in the January 9 referendum.

SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum said China was the largest investor in southern Sudan and it would be protected if the region secedes.

Mr. Amum revealed that China invested billions of dollars in the oil sector, and has a large number of Chinese workers in the oil fields in southern Sudan.

He said the SPLM gave assurances to the Chinese leadership that it will protect Chinese investments in southern Sudan.

Mr. Amum made these remarks to the Agence France Presse after a meeting with a delegation from the Chinese Communist Party yesterday.
