Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF in collaboration with local health authorities opens a cholera treatment centre in Juba in response to the outbreak declared by the national Health Ministry on June 23.
MSF in a statement says the eight hundred square meter facility is located in the neighborhood of Munuki Block A designed to be expanded to a 150–bed capacity.
It reports that local authorities in Juba County and the World Health Organization or WHO reported seven hundred and ten cases and 33 deaths as of July 7.
MSF Head of Mission in South Sudan Paul Crotchety says cholera suspects are to receive free and high-quality treatment at their modern center with urgently-needed medical service to reduce patients’ risk of dying from the disease.
MSF Emergency Medical Coordinator Stephanie Mayronne urges citizens experiencing diarrhea and vomiting to seek treatment as soon as possible.
Cholera is a water-borne bacteria which causes profuse diarrhea, vomiting and rapid dehydration.
