The United Nations Children Fund or UNICEF is appealing for additional funding of 34 million US Dollars to continue scaling up its nutrition response in 2015 in the country.

The agency in a statement issued on Wednesday urged the warring parties to follow up fast on cessation of hostilities agreement or face catastrophic food shortages.

The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification or IPC experts’ report indicated that the ongoing conflict is sharply reducing food supplies and slowing humanitarian access.

UNICEF’s latest nutrition report supports the findings of the IPC, showing that only a rapid scaling up of humanitarian aid prevented a further deterioration of the nutrition situation in the worst-hit states.

At least 229 thousand children are estimated to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition in South Sudan and that the number is expected to double should the conflict intensify.
