Medicine Sans Frontiers or MSF said thousands of people fleeing violence in Northern Bahr El Ghazal are in desperate need of food, water and medical care.

MSF Project Coordinator Andrew Zadel in a statement CRN obtained on Wednesday said ‘The humanitarian situation in Aweil North is already dire and access to healthcare is a chronic problem.

He warned that with the addition of thousands of newly displaced people, the situation would deteriorate even more.

The Coordinator lamented that the IDPs are forced to gather wild tamarind fruits and leaves of the Akuor tree for their food and some collect desert dates, spending hours using sticks to crack open the fruit to boil and eat the inner seed.

He expressed worries that the nutritional situation of the IDPs would deteriorate in the coming months if significant assistance is not provided, calling for other organizations to help the neglected population.

Mr Zadel said food, water and healthcare needs are significant and many new arrivals are only surviving on water from hand-dug wells and almost all are forced to defecate in the open due to lack of sanitation facilities.

He said new families build basic huts from sticks and grass and share the scarce water and food resources of the host community.
